Our Project in Huancavelica, Peru
There is so much that we are getting out of this amazing opportunity to travel to Peru and learn as much as we can. As a team we decided that we were going to take the time that we have been given to make the job of the medical team easier and take as much as we could out of this unique chance to be in Peru. We have been very lucky to find generous people and companies that saw the importance of PAMS (Peruvian American Medical Society) and the work that they are doing. To them we would like to say none of this would be possible without your help and we are very thankful for your support.
DENTAL
One project that we worked very hard on was to promote dental hygiene. our team worked together to get toothbrushes and toothpaste donated. We will put those in individual packages with an instruction card to teach children how to brush their teeth step by step.
ORPHANAGE
Near the location where the mission will be based there is an orphanage that cares for about 50 children. Our team is going to make a special trip up to the orphanage to play with the children and teach them some English. The work done by the individuals that run the orphanage is commendable. They were gracious enough to let us come; we wanted to do something for those children so our team, family and friends of our team donated two computers some educational games, books, pens, pencils, crayons, erasers, paper coloring books and educational work books. We are very excited about our upcoming visit and cannot wait to share our experiences with you on our blog.
PAMPHLETS
We as a team were very lucky that the director of the Huancavelica mission lives very close to University of California Irvine, and that he was generous with his time, dedicating one Saturday every month to meet with us, to help us prepare and choose projects that would be most beneficial to the mission. Dr. Kuon explained that health awareness is not something that is circulated throughout the province of Huancavelica. We were able to get pamphlets donated that explain maternity health, the dangers of smoking.
