Overview
Author:
Huaytara province of Departamento Huancavelica. Huaytara City is the capital of the province and has 16 districts. Huaytara is a historic place with Inka Palaces, total area populations close to 30 thousand farmers, and a small minimal level Hospital. The hospital is new and is meant to replace or upgrade a minimalist health center that could not provide even very basic services.
The newly added areas that the hospital provides are surgery and an emergency room. Huancavelica is within 100 miles away and for the first time added a surgeon, a pediatrician, a gynecologist and an anesthesiologist, thus we were able to perform a few surgeries which we did not anticipate in our 12 month preparation. The mission Director was Dr. Ralph Kwon with co-director Dr. Lucy Munoz. Our 15 member professional team delivered General Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Dental, Psychology and Surgical services. Social Issues: abandoned elderly, poor sanitation, contaminated waters, Dental care is so lacking that our three colleagues which included the local one, did work every day until 8 or 9 pm. |
Statistics
We treated 317 patients and helped to do some 10 surgeries including a parotid tumor, one acute, cholecystitis, and large hernias. These were performed with minimal surgical tools and a proficient anesthesiologist without a functional anesthesia machine (as was performed a century ago). We screened 94 patients for Diabetes and this resulted in discovering 4 with high blood sugar.
The most frequent diseases seen were Osteoarthritis, Gastritis, Allergies, Hearing Problems, Abdominal Pain, Parasitosis, Pharingitis, Sinusitis, Respiratory Problems On the psychology field: conduct problems, domestic violence, and anxiety. Proper identification of children selected for special programs should be assessed (stuttering should attend regular school). |
