Juan Angelats, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.R.C.S.C.
Juan Angelats
Dr. Juan Angelats helped form and strengthen the bond between PAMS and Rotary International of Homewood, Illinois, in the 1990s. The Homewood Rotarians has lent tremendous non-medical assistance and supported several medical mission. Each medical mission requires 18 months work prior to the mission for planning and coordination including at least two preliminary visits. Dr. Angelats pointed out that we have to be sensitive to how local hospital run their daily tasks and operations because it is no small consideration to let a large group of people from another country to take over their hospital for a period of time. The PAMS and organizers’ tremendous success is able to acquire generous sponsors to donate much needed medicine, supplies and instruments, such as X-ray machines, respirators, ICU monitoring equipments and much more, which are scarce or nonexistent in many Peruvian hospitals. Leaving the donated supplies and equipments will benefit the hospitals and patients in the long term. The surgical team performs many procedures such as cleft lip and palate, assorted types of eye examination and surgery, hand and finger operations, burn reconstructions and much more. Peru is home to the highest snowcapped peak mountains known as the Andes, and a large portion of the Amazon rainforest. Peru is also a home to a population of 27 million people. More than 50 percent of the population lives below the poverty line and half of that percentage are considered destitute. The shocking uneven ratio of doctor to patients and the remote highland areas access to hospital and medical care are equally challenging. Dr. Angelats has given much back to his native country and impacted on countless lives throughout Peru more than 25 years working in leading roles with PAMS to improve medical conditions in Peru. Dr. Angelats and volunteers he drafts, endeavor to serve the most needy at their most difficult time and provide a service to these people who would not have receive otherwise. He also takes pride how American volunteers have been touched by the medical missions.
