A mission report from Alain Guerdat, a 2012 volunteer in the Huancavelica Medical Mission who continued our education project with the children in Huancavelica.
MISSION TO HUANCAVELICA
WEEK FROM 11 TO 18 AUGUST 2012
As a voluntary, my activity was essentially to receive children, during the waiting time when they came to receive medical control or children that were only accompanying their parents. I brought hundred of color pencils and did photocopy of different coloring books (i.e. Snow White, The Chocolate House). They had the possibility to draw, but most of them like and choose coloring.
There were around seven to ten children in the tent and same outside waiting for their tour. The coloring time, per child, took approximate one hour. Between 150 and 200 children participated to this activity during the five days. The request was higher because of the teachers strike in the city and there were children from outside that heard that something was going on in the hospital.
The serious work children manifested and the quality of some of it surprised me.
They had the choice to bring their coloring home or to leave it for exposition in our tent. We have never find any coloring neglected, which proof that it was very important for them. Once they finished coloring they could show it to the responsible of the donation tent and they received a toy or cloth, which stimulated them to do a good work.
The problem raised was the rotation of children because of the lack of space. The first two days, I was spending time explaining that they needed to wait because there was no more space inside. From the moment I established a waiting list this problem was fixed. With the experience, I could inform the child of the approximate hour he/she could come in. Since then the children stopped to pile up in front of the tent.
I kept an excellent impression of this mission. The children’s eyes, their calm and
concentration demonstrated that this time was very important and value for them. For me it was very rewarding, rich and stimulated time with them.
Looking forward for another mission.
